The Stirling Castle is the most important fortress in Scotland. Before the union with England it was also used as a Scottish royal residence. Several Kings and Queens were crowned at Stirling, including Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1542.
This statue represents Robert I Bruce, king of Scotland from 1274 to 1329. He was one of the most important kings of Scotland and also one of the bravest warriors of his time. During the Scottish War of Independence he formed an alliance with William Wallace, fighting against Edward I of England.
On the east side of the Inner Close there is the Great Hall, or Parliament Hall. This was built by James IV. It represents the first example of Reinassence-influenced royal architecture in that country.
